Children of the Confederacy®

 

2nd Maryland Cavalry 984

The Children of the Confederacy (CofC) is an auxiliary organization of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). As early as 1896, UDC members started organizing children’s chapters to do work parallel to the UDC. The first CofC Division Convention was held in Georgia in 1912, and the first CofC General Convention was held in 1955.

The first CofC chapter in Maryland was Samual Sutherland 350 of Baltimore. It was chartered in 1941 by Mrs. Lygia Sutherland Bortner, Samual Sutherland’s granddaughter. After this chapter became defunct, the current CofC chapter, 2nd Maryland Cavalry 984, was chartered in April of 2019. The sponsoring UDC chapter of 2nd Maryland Cavalry 984 is First Maryland Cavalry 1858 of Ellicott City, Maryland. 

The CofC Creed:

“Because we desire to perpetuate and love and honor the heroic deeds of those who enlisted in the Confederate Services and upheld its flag through four years of war, we, the children of the South, have united in an organization called the “Children of the Confederacy,” in which our strength, enthusiasm, and love of justice can exert its influence. We therefore pledge ourselves to preserve pure ideas to honor the memory of our beloved veterans; to study and teach the truths of history ( one of the most important of which is the War Between the States was not a rebellion, nor was its underlying cause to sustain sustained slavery); and always to act in a manner that will reflect honor upon our noble and patriotic ancestors.”

Objectives:

  • Historical, Benevolent, Educational, Patriotic, Memorial
  • Each project and activity we do can be traced back to one or more of these objectives.

Meetings:

  • 2nd Maryland Cavalry 984 meets 4 times per year.
  • Meetings consist of ritual, officer reports, old and new business, historical program, catechism, fun and fellowship.
  • Meetings have been followed by pool parties, cookouts, making s’mores, watching movies, and more!

Events and Activities:

2nd Maryland Cavalry 984 participates in events and activities around Maryland including Wreaths Across America, Maryland Confederate Memorial Day, Point Lookout POW Memorial Service, field trips, and UDC & SCV sponsored events.

Eligibility:

  • Children 18 years of age and younger with a lineal or collateral ancestor who served the Confederacy honorably
  • Boys can have simultaneous membership in the CofC and SCV
  • Girls cannot be in the CofC and UDC at the same time

  • Application
    • Information about your Confederate ancestor (civil service or material aid)
    • Show your lineage to your ancestor
    • Provide required proofs
    • Cost: $11 per child (includes Membership + Certificate)
